Great Milestone Achieved by UoG!

NURTURE project coordinator at the University of Gondar, Dr. Daniel Tadesse, reports that, regardless of the huge challenges faced during the last years, finally, last week UoG successfully launched its Ph.D. programs that were developed in collaboration with the NURTURE project. He announced that, as part of this initiative, four Ph.D. students have joined the Ph.D. program of Data Science so far.

In the Ph.D. program’s inauguration ceremony, UoG celebrated this great milestone on 18th November 2024 where they marked a significant milestone for their College of Informatics. Dr. Taddesse adds that this was made possible through the support of the NURTURE project and its partners from both southern and northern institutions in the preparation of the three Ph.D. curricula.

The ceremony was attended by key figures including Dr. Kassahun Tegegne, Academic Vice President of the University of Gondar; Dr. Worku Abebe, Dean of the College of Informatics; and Dr. Yilkal Mulualem, Vice Dean of the College of Informatics. Other attendees included deans, vice deans, directors, faculty members from the College of Informatics, and newly recruited students.

Notably, Professor Binyam Tilahun, Research and Technology Transfer Vice President and NURTURE Project Director at the University of Gondar; Professor Shegaw Mengiste, NURTURE Project Coordinator; and Dr. Daniel Tadesse, NURTURE Project Coordinator at the University of Gondar, participated virtually and shared their insights regarding the new programs.

During the inaugural ceremony, attendees received background information from the College of Informatics and three PhD programs. Key messages were delivered, and discussions focused on how to support the programs and ensure their sustainability. The event concluded with a presentation of certificates to individuals who actively contributed to the establishment of the three PhD programs.

For the 2023/24 academic year, four students registered to begin PhD classes in the Data Science program. The other two programs, PhDs in Cyber Security and Digital Transformation, are expected to commence once additional students are registered in the coming semester.

WELL DONE AND CONGRATS UoG!
