Hawassa University conducted a workshop for the kick-off NURTURE project in November 2022.
In this workshop, the Institute of Technology at HU organized a NURTURE launching program on the main campus with the presence of Dr. Fasika Bete the Scientific Director of the institute. The main goals of the NURTURE project were presented to the audience and Dr. Tafesse Matiwos the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer elaborated on how NURTURE can enhance social cohesion, sustainable development, active citizenship, and personal and institutional fulfillment across the partner universities.
Also, Dr. Shegaw Mengiste, the NURTURE Project Coordinator from the University of South Eastern Norway, and Dr. Tesfaye Bayu the Deputy Director of IoT and Research and Technology Transfer Directorate at HU mentioned the areas of the project and the implementation plan ahead.

Infrastructure Equipment at HU
One of the goals of the NURTURE project is to provide small scale infrastructure for the Southern partners in Ehtiopia along with the establishment of educational technology related master programs. In this regard, Hawassa University has been equipped with a small computer lab provided by NURTURE to elevate digital access and support inclusion of disabled groups via e-learning platforms. This is the first step of small infrastructure procurement at Hawassa University and NURTURE is trying to expand it through the coming years. Dr. Tesfaye Bayu, project coordinator on the HU side has opened the lab just recently.
Ethiopian New Year!
Enkutatash (Ge’ez: እንቁጣጣሽ) is the New Year in Ethiopia and is a public holiday too. It occurs on Meskerem 1 on the Ethiopian calendar, which is 11 September (or, during a leap year, 12 September) according to the Gregorian calendar.
In this regard, exchange students from the NURTURE project, who are residing in Norway these days, gathered together and celebrated their new year by making a special cake and food.

Paper Published by Tesfahun Hailemariam
Congratulation to Tesfahun Hailemariam, one of our talented exchange students who came to Norway to continue his Ph.D. at the University of South Eastern Norway. Now, he has published his first paper in Norway with Asmamaw Atnafu, Lemma Derseh Gezieh, and Binyam Tilahun in PLOS ONE Journal. The paper is titled ” Why Maternal Continuum of Care Remains Low in Northwest Ethiopia? A Multilevel Logistic Regression Analysis”. “Non-adherence to the maternal continuum of care remains a significant challenge. Though early initiation and continuum of care are recommended for mothers’ and newborns’ well-being, there is a paucity of evidence that clarify this condition in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to assess the level of women’s completion of the maternal continuum of care and factors affecting it in Northwest Ethiopia.”

NURTURE 2022 Review Seminar
Annual Seminar on Nurturing SDGs through Higher Education Capacity Building in Ethiopia was held from 6th to 8th September 2022 in Addis Ababa at Capital Hotel and Spa with the presence of officials and representatives from the Norwegian Embassy Counselor for Education, Ministry of Education, NORAD, University of South Eastern Norway, University of Oslo, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, Hawassa University, Jimma University, and University of Gondar. The University of Gondar was the organizer of this event.

NURTURE in NORAD
Dr. Shegaw presented NURTURE’s goals and milestones in NORHED Seminar that took place in NORAD’s office yesterday 1st September. In this seminar, Dr. Shegaw presented the ultimate goals of the project and the results achieved so far. There were participants on behalf of all of the stakeholders involved in the project.

The first batch of Exchange students from the Nurture project and the 4th batch from the SEARCH project arrived in Oslo yesterday on 25th August! These students are from five Universities in Ethiopia! It was a long day to deal with the practicalities, but it was also rewarding to contribute to creating opportunities and capacity building for young Ethiopian academicians!
Thank you all from partner universities who worked hard to make this happen!
Three of the incoming students are about to continue their Ph.D. studies at USN Drammen campus, and the other three are about to continue their master studies at USN Ringerike campus in the subject of Management Information Systems.
